The work of the DA-led coalition in Joburg will not be derailed by the ANC

The following Member Statement was delivered in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature today in terms of Rule 81 (1), by the DA’s Johannesburg Regional Chairperson, Dr Heinrich Volmink MPL.

Madam Speaker,

The DA would like this house to note the motions of no confidence, once again submitted by the ANC in the Johannesburg City Council, against Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba and Speaker, Cllr Vasco da Gama.

It is a shame that the ANC has once again resorted to submitting a motion of this nature that seeks to undo the exceptional work of the DA-led coalition city council under the leadership of Mayor Mashaba. Many wrongs have been rewritten under the DA administration.

This motion is baseless.

Instead of engaging the Council and vigorously debating matters that affect residents across the city, particularly the poor, the ANC seems to be preoccupied with establishing an environment where patronage is protected and cronies in the city are shielded.

The ANC has once again employed desperate and ill-conceived tactics in a futile attempt to regain power. It will stop at nothing to try and derail a functioning, corruption-busting, pro-poor and effective service delivery administration, to score political points.

The DA will continue to ensure that residents are made aware of the ANC’s tactics in delaying much-needed service delivery at their cost.

Fortunately, Speaker, residents don’t forget too easily and the effects of this frivolous motion will be felt at the ballot box come 2019.

Playing politics with the lives of people in desperate need of service delivery is dangerous.

I thank you.
