Jack Bloom is the DA Shadow MEC on Health in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Jack previously served as the DA Gauteng Caucus Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition from March 2011 to May 2014 and from December 2007 till April 2009.
He first became politically active as a volunteer worker for the Progressive Federal Party in the early 1980s.
In August 1991, Jack was elected unopposed as Ward Councillor for Highlands North for the Democratic Party and became the youngest Member of the DP caucus in the Johannesburg City Council.
He was one of five DP members who were elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in 1994 where he also served as Chief Whip.
Born in Doornfontein, Johannesburg in 1961, Jack matriculated at Athlone Boys High in 1977. He has a BA Honours degree in Psychology and earned an MBA from Wits University, where his thesis became a book titled ‘Black South Africa and the Disinvestment Dilemma’ (Jonathan Ball, 1986).
Jack is a prolific writer of articles published both locally and overseas and has authored three more books – ‘Out of Step’ (2005), ‘Rising Tide – How Freedom with Responsibility Uplifts Everyone’ (2009), and ‘30 Nights in a Shack – A Politician’s Journey’ in 2015.
His interests include reading, classical music, travel and archaeology.
