Fred Nel is the DA Gauteng shadow MEC for Roads and Transport and a Caucus Whip. He is a member of the DA Federal Council and DA Gauteng North Regional Chairperson.
Fred was born and raised in Pretoria where he matriculated in 1987 from Hoërskool Waterkloof. After school he studied a BA degree at the University of Pretoria and obtain a BA Honours degree in Geography.
Fred started in politics in 1988 at the Tukkies campus and became the DP national youth leader in 1992. He was first elected as a councillor in 1998 to the Greater Pretoria Metropolitan Council. In 2000 he was elected to the Tshwane Metro council where he was caucus chief whip until 2003 when he became the caucus leader. In 2009 Fred was elected to the Gauteng Legislature and re-elected to the same legislature in 2014. Fred has served on numerous committees inside and outside the DA and its predecessors.
Professionally Fred worked in the fields of public relations, tourism marketing, market research and corporate social investment consulting before committing full-time to politics.
Fred enjoys watching and coaching sport and cycling in his free time. He is also an avid DIY practitioner in the privacy of his own home. Fred enjoys spending time with his wife Thana and their three children whenever he gets an opportunity.
