Poor State of Benoni School a Danger Zone

March 9, 2015

During a recent oversight visit to Verkenner Primary School in Benoni east of Johannesburg. I was disappointed to see the shocking infrastructure conditions that both learners and teachers have had to endure.

The disastrous state of wear and tear has left the school with; caved in ceilings, damaged learning material, a ruined foundation and faulty electrical appliances- all due to water damage. These poor conditions have caused a very hazardous learning environment for students as well as  working environment for teachers. Despite a visit by Education Department officials in December last year, to date nothing has been done.

Both principals and teachers have tried to in improve the school where possible, but their efforts are only a drop in the ocean in comparison to the cumbersome maintenance work that is desperately needed.

I have sent out written questions to Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and Infrastructure Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, regarding the maintenance at the Verkenner Primary school. Education is a strategic development tool, to empower our children to develop our country.

Failure to ensure that the correct infrastructural facilities are in place is a missed opportunity to ensure that all learners get quality education.
