Kwanele! Stop Violence Against Women and Children in Gauteng

August 23, 2017

It is high time that combating gender-based violence shifted from simply lamenting and condemning it, to men playing the key role of calling each other out and holding each other accountable for sexist, misogynistic and otherwise generally patriarchal attitudes that enable violence against women. – Mmusi Maimane

1)  the lack of capacity and resourcing of the current Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units (FCS) to deal effectively with violent and sexual crimes against women and children in Gauteng.
2)  the low conviction rates in crimes of a sexually violent nature

We the citizens of Gauteng call for the Provincial Commissioner Lt. General Deliwe de Lange and Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi Malobane to initiate a process to ensure that each police station in Gauteng has a dedicated unit of properly trained officers to attend to the women and children who are victims of sexual and violent crimes.  Experienced officers should be capacitated to take a case from reporting to conviction to ensure continuity.

Victims should be treated with empathy and have access to privacy when reporting, be treated with dignity and respect, have access to medical assistance where required and be given continuous feedback throughout the process.  Officers who send victims away from police stations without opening a case or showing due diligence and respect for the seriousness of the offence reported must be disciplined.
