The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the demolition of the old asbestos Noordgesig Primary School and the construction of a new brick and mortar school.
For far too long Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi has made promises to replace this asbestos structure and only after enormous pressure from the DA has the process begun.
This school was supposed to be demolished and reconstructed in 2009 due to the health risks associated with asbestos, however the process was marred due to unnecessary delays.
During an oversight inspection to the school this week, we were pleased to discover that the process of building a new school is underway.
Learners from the school have been relocated to temporary container classrooms next to the school.
We have been informed that the school will be completed by the end of August 2019. The department must ensure that there are no disruptions to the project so that the school is completed within the stipulated timeframe as learners should not receive their education in these containers for an indefinite period of time.
Safety precautions should be followed when removing asbestos and they should also ensure that learners don’t get closer to the construction site.
The DA will continue to monitor the department’s performance to ensure that it sticks to the stipulated timeframes.
