In the 2013/14 financial year, it could not account for revenue from at least 5,5 million litres of water, partly from poor billing systems, but also through losses caused by lack of maintenance.

As a result of this negligence, the municipality has posted a revenue shortfall totalling R30,3 million.
Last year, vast parts of Gauteng suffered agonising weeks of water shortages.
One would imagine that in light of this, municipalities and other responsible entities would make a concerted effort to ensure water wastage does not take place.
Yet, this does not seem to concern the ANC led Merafong municipality.
Coupled with water loss, the municipality experienced electricity losses in the same financial year of over 42 million KW – totalling R39,9 million.
With the country’s electricity supply on a precipice, and water always in short demand, it is clear that Merafong is playing a dangerous game with the well-being of its residents.
The DA will continue to insist that the MEC for Local Government, Jacob Mamabolo, take drastic measures in Merafong before the situation is completely beyond repair.
