MEC Mashatile must investigate illegal land scheme in Ekurhuleni

June 19, 2017

Gauteng Human Settlements MEC, Paul Mashatile must urgently investigate the alleged illegal selling of land in Zonkizizwe, Ekurhuleni by ANC officials.

An ANC-Ekurhuleni official has been arrested for allegedly defrauding innocent people by illegally selling Ekurhuleni municipality land and pocketing the money collected.

The ANC official was targeting vulnerable people who are desperate to own land.

The suspect allegedly sold a small stand for R35 000 and a bigger stand for R70 000 and used the letterhead of the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements when issuing the land buyers with a proof of payment and purchase.

Innocent people fell prey to such a scheme due to the Department’s failure to fast-track the allocation and delivery of houses as promised by the MEC.

The DA is disappointed, but not shocked by the continuing pattern of corruption by ANC officials. The ANC simply cannot be trusted.

The DA will table questions to the MEC for Human Settlements to ascertain the following:

1) How did the ANC official access the Department of Human Settlements’ letterhead that was used to defraud communities?
2) How far is the investigation?
3) Is there a Departmental official involved in this case?

The DA calls upon all those responsible to return every cent collected and for the law to take its course.

The DA Katlehong branches led by Councillor Simangele Sabe will continue monitoring such issues and pressure the MEC to take action against the perpetrators.
