E-tolls: DA calls on public to demand provincial referendum

February 9, 2015

Moodey-John1-240x300The DA calls on the citizens of Gauteng to make use of the Pointers4Premier initiative and demand that Premier David Makhura announce a provincial referendum on the future implementation of e-tolls in his State of the Province Address (SOPA).

In the build-up to SOPA on February 23, the provincial government invited residents to make suggestions on what he should address in his speech via email or on social media.

During his first address last year, the premier promised to listen to the people, and announced that an e-toll review panel would be established to investigate the socio-economic impact of e-tolls on the province.

After months of consultations and deliberations the message is clear: The people of Gauteng are opposed to e-tolls, it is an unnecessary burden on the poor and working class, and they must be scrapped.

Despite the overwhelming public opposition to e-tolls, the premier continues to cling to its continued use – despite his 30 September 2014 promise that he would stick with the people of Gauteng.

To this end the DA requests every resident of Gauteng with access to email, to send a short message to Pointers4premier@gauteng.gov.za and to cc dagpleg@gmail.com and demand that the premier announce a provincial referendum on e-tolls.

With submission to this address due to close on 16 February, the DA encourages every person to participate in this process, and give back power to the people.
