DA Challenges ANC to Remove Convicted Mogale Councillor

March 15, 2015

The DA calls on the Speaker of the Mogale City Council, Cllr Suzen Thupane to establish an ad-hoc committee to investigate the conduct of ward councillor, Walter Mfanelo Plaatjie, who was found guilty on charges of corruption.Fuchs-Alan1

In November 2014 the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court found Cllr Plaatjie guilty of fraud and corruption for receiving benefits not legally due to him.

The court found that Plaatje had sold a property in Rietvallei Extension 3 in 2008 without having the right to do so, as it did not legally belong to him. He was given a choice to pay a fine of R20 000 or serve a five-year sentence in prison.

Plaatje opted to pay the fine and is still serving as councillor.

Cllr Plaatje violated the Code of Conduct for Municipal Councillors as set down in the Municipal Systems Act, by failing to:

  • Perform his functions of office in good faith, honestly and in a transparent manner, and
  • To act in such a way that the credibility and integrity of the municipality are not compromised.

The ANC, as majority party in this council have the power to remove Cllr Plaatjie from office, and they have to live up to President Jacob Zuma and Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s stances on corruption, and show that they are serious about rooting out corrupt activities.

If not, the ANC will only further strengthen the public perception that it will go to any lengths to protect one of their own – irrespective of their conduct.

To this end the DA calls on Speaker Thupane and the ANC to establish the ad-hoc committee, investigate Cllr Plaatjie’s conduct and to remove him from office.

The ANC must show its commitment to the fight against corruption, and ensure that no municipal council openly flouts open and transparent governance.
