Bara Hospital Emergency Generator Fails

Bara Hospital Emergency Generator Fails
April 23, 2015

Patients’ lives were at risk in the early hours of this morning when the generator for emergency operating theatres at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital failed to work after a power failure.Jack Bloom DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health

Electricity was cut to the hospital for unexplained reasons at 03:00, and the generators all kicked in, but at 03:30 the generator for emergency theatres failed and only came back at 08:00

Emergency patients were moved to other theatres, but it is of great concern that a key generator was out of action for four-and-a-half hours.

There is a disturbing history of failed promises to ensure that Bara hospital has a reliable electricity supply.

This latest incident raises questions about proper maintenance of generators that have failed on previous occasions.

Frequent power cuts worsen the enormous surgery backlog at Bara, where nearly 5000 patients wait for operations.

We need answers from the Gauteng Health Department why our largest hospital is still plagued by power disruptions.
