Baby dies after guards block mother from Lenasia clinic

February 9, 2015

Bloom-Jack1I am horrified that a baby allegedly died because security guards barred the mother from the Lenasia South Clinic.

I have spoken to Ms Mathipane Letty Sebitso, who lives in the Finetown informal settlement, who told me that she took her three-week-old baby Queen Elizabeth Mashego to the 24-hour clinic on Saturday 24 January this year.

The child died in her mother’s arms at about 17h35 after security guards told her that the doctors had left and refused to open the gate for her.

Police were called to the scene and even after the baby had died the security refused to let them in so that nurses could check if the baby was really dead.

I have written to Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu to request a full investigation into this matter.

It is completely unacceptable that security guards can deny treatment to anyone.
