by Refiloe Nt’sekhe MPL – DA Shadow MEC for Social Development
Out of the 294 businesses assisted by the Department of Social Development, only 35 have survived in the past 5 years. This was revealed by the MEC for Social Development, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza.
The MEC was responding to my oral questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature about young entrepreneurs who have undergone the Youth Entrepreneurship Programme.
Given the poor economic climate of Gauteng, where young people are struggling to find jobs, it is unacceptable that this number is so low.
During the 2016/2017 financial year 11 180 young people went through the Youth Entrepreneurship Programme.
While the department has exceeded its targets in training youth in the entrepreneurship programme, they are clearly not being provided with the necessary skills needed to run a successful business.
The Department of Social Development and the Department of Economic Development in Gauteng need to work together to ensure that more businesses are established by the young people. These businesses should also receive the necessary guidance and support to ensure that they are sustainable.
The DA will meet with these businesses to ascertain the challenges that they are faced with in order to provide viable solutions.
It is clear that the ANC-led Gauteng government does not have a workable plan and vision for the youth of the province and the crisis of unemployment. Only a DA-led government can bring change to Gauteng that prioritises jobs and the youth.
